The Muppets Movie
At last I have seen The Muppets in theatres! It was fantastic! I'm not ashamed to say I began tearing up a couple of time throughout the film.
So much of my childhood was in this movie! They brought back so many of the Muppets that have been missing since Jim Henson's death. It really captured the humour, and heart, of The Muppets that I grew up watching. Jim Henson died when I was four-years-old, and it was amazing to see many of his characters come back to life again after so long.
The trailers and promotional material made Walter look a character that would simply be made a source of ridicule, but he so much more than that. He was a likeable character who was a great addition to the Muppets. His enthusiasm was wonderful and was sweet to see how the other accepted him into their family.
I began tearing up during Kermit's song, Pictures in My Head. It was just so sad, nostalgic and beautiful. And then the movie became even more wonderfully nostalgic and fun when tracked down the old gang! Some of my old favourites came back, like Rowlf and Scooter! Rowlf was always one of my favourite Muppets. I thought Rowlf's story was hilarious, and so true to his character!
"Hey Rowlf, you want to get back together?"
"Okay."
Classic, indeed Rowlf! I adore his laid back attitude.
And Electric Mayhem, Bunsen Honeydew, Beaker, Lew Zealand and even Beaurgard came back! He's one of the more obscure Muppets, so I wasn't expecting to see again! He's been stuck in a closet all these years! :D
Oh, and Sam the Eagle is back too! Apparently, he is a pundit working for a satirical channel satirizing Fox News! He should go on the actual thing one day! Though that will probably never happen, since they accused the Muppets of being Communists. I think he'd be great on The Colbert Report. He and Stephen would get along so well.
And of course, Miss Piggy was amazing!. I loved that she made a successful career for herself as the plus size editor of Vogue Magazine! <3 I love that she laid things clearly out for Kermit, and that he has to accept the way she is or he can leave. I love that she came back to help for everyone. And I love that she got shit done. When they couldn't find a guest star, she rallied the others together and kidnapped Jack Black. They did justice to her in this film! She was a no-nonsense badass like she's supposed to be!
I laughed so hard at the Barbershop Quartet singing Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit! And Jack Black's, "You're ruining one of the greatest songs of all time" just made it even better. I think I was the only one in the theatre laughing, though. Hee
I was a little disappointed that Gonzo played such a small part. But he's had the spotlight a lot over the years, and they needed to show all the Muppets coming back to the fray. Another popular Muppet, Rizzo, had an even smaller part. That was saddening, but again, I understand why.
I can't tell you how happy I was to see Kermit and Miss Piggy sing The Rainbow Connection. The movie would have been complete without that song, and it pulled off so beautifully! It had me close to tears, but I didn't actually cry until the end, Kermit opened the door to thousands of fans. It drove home how important the Muppets were, and still are, to many people.
Before I watched the film, I was a little afraid it wouldn't live up to the old Muppets series and movies. But it did! The movie is special to me because it contained the humour, fun and heart that makes the Muppets special. Thank you for this movie, Jason Segal. You did an amazing job.
