Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse

So, the movie was incredible! I'll be writing up a review soon. The first line is pretty much going to be, "It's unexpected, to say the least, that the best Spiderman movie would come from the same studio that brought us the Emoji movie, but here we are. "

Nerdy Book Discussions

I wanted ask people what books series were important to them growing up?

The Tortall books by Tamora Pierce were deeply formative for me. The Harry Potter books came a little later in my life, and while engrossing and important, I don't think they had the impact on me that Tamora Pierce's work did.

What books meant a lot to you as a kid?

Hot Take

Youtubers like CinemaSins have done a lot to ruin criticism of media and  largely reduced it to petty nitpicking.

Fantasy

Fantasy is a great genre because of freedom it allows the writer to create and build their own world with rules unique to it. It's also terrifying for that same reason.

Posting one of my articles

 radishesandqueens.blogspot.com/2018/10/remembering-louisa-lawson.html

I write articles on lesser known Australian historical figures. And a few months back, I wrote an article about Louisa Lawson, a suffragist, poet and the mother of Henry Lawson. It goes into concerns about political representation for women both in her time and in the present day.

I touch on the recent controversy with the conservative Liberal party dismissing the need to increase the amount of female politicians in their party. We can't have quotas, because everyone has to be there based on "merit!" And I used the sources I draw on to explain "merit" is such a bullshit concept.

I really enjoyed writing this article, because Louisa did some amazing things for women's rights in this country. The next article I'm doing is on Tasmanian Aboriginal business woman and teacher, Lucy Beaton.

The Prince and The Witch

My latest short story, which is basically a second and final draft of a previous short story called The Witch Abigail. I'm very proud of how this version turned out, after A LOT of time revising and trying to come up with a satisfying ending that isn't a definitive conclusion. Because I wanted to imply that this only the beginning for these characters.

I wrote up a brief summary of the sort of stories you can expect to find from me on my Patreon:

I write fairy tale retellings that subvert tradition, with plenty of quirky characters and wry humour. I often look at themes of reality vs. expectations, and what it means to be free of them. They often include magic and mystery of some kind, with endings that are usually at least a little ambiguous.

New Short Story

I'm currently in the middle of writing a new short story called Three Witches and A Thief. Here is the blurb I wrote for the story:

Jed thought this would be a job like any other. He'd steal a magic orb for three witches, and be one his way with a nice sum of money. However, his work becomes more complicated when he's drawn into a complex plot full of intrigue by higher forces. It doesn't help that he's starting to become attached to these quirky and fun-loving witches.

So, would anyone be interested in me writing this online sci-fi series calledThe Collectors? The premise: cynical garbage collector for a space station, Janet Schweitzer stumbles upon a map that leads to world thought to only exist in myth and legend. It soon begins to attract the attention of many powerful and dangerous factions, including an idealistic young archaeologist with a passion for danger and the unknown.

Basically, searching for relics in space with some political intrigue thrown in.

The Raven and the Reindeer

I greatly enjoyed The Raven and the Reindeer by T. Kingfisher. The novel is a retelling of The Snow Queen, and it’s frankly of the best renditions of the fairy tale I’ve ever seen.

With clever, tongue-in-cheek humour and a wonderfully strange take on magic, The Raven and the Reindeer acts as a nuanced deconstruction of heteronormativity and sexism in fairy tales. With the heroine, Gerta, gradually realising her own potential as a person on her journey and falling in love with the character of the Robber Girl. At the beginning of the novel, Gerta is a teenage girl, infatuated with Kay, the distant and aloof boy she grew up with. She says at the beginning, she doesn’t want to be like “other girls.” Her grandmother jokingly says she'll make bright green socks, insuring she will be different from other girls. The resulting journey she goes when Kai is whisked away in a carriage drawn by giant white otters,is in turns sweet, funny and brutal.

Gerta matures and discovers more about the world and herself than she ever thought possible, running into old, wise ladies and becomes friends with a snarky, yet loyal raven. She becomes more self-sufficient than ever. This version of the Robber Girl is named Janna and she is a very well-developed and interesting character, who had to grow up too fast, and wishes to escape from her life of brutality. She has a deeply compelling character arc of her own.

This novel is fun, exciting with lots of irreverent humour and great characters. It makes many sly references to the original fairy tale, while creating it's own subversive and innovative tale.  If you’re looking for a good fairy tale retelling that I would definitely recommend this novel. While the word deconstruction is thrown around a lot these days, The Raven and the Reindeer is what a deconstruction should look like.

annoying things done in fanfics

When Sunset is depicted as anything other than the blatant dork lesbian that she is.

Although, please keep in mind, there is ONE guy that she's willing to shower attention and affection on ... his name is Ray.
