Jun. 30th, 2010 10:12 pmI wish people would stop thinking of glasses as these horrible things that tarnish ones beauty. I was chatting with someone at a friend’s party not long while ago. She apparently needs glasses for the same reason I do, which is astigmatism (well, I also need them for mild short- sightedness). She told me that she only wears glasses when she's at work. She said they made her look “too nerdy" and was clearly very ashamed of them.
I really dislike that glasses are generally seen as these hideous things that mar your face. They’re often depicted in Hollywood as The Root of All Ugliness. I have loathed “the glasses have got to go trope” since The Princess Dairies. I didn’t realize just how horrible and offensive The Princess Dairies was until I was older and started wearing glasses. I used to love it, but I later thought that, you know, it's pretty bad to imply you can't be a "real" princess until you get a makeover and have your glasses broken in two. They were only hiding your beauty.
So yeah, specs are not, in fact, The Worst Things Ever. I just felt like saying that.
