This is DS9 meta I wrote ages ago. I wasn't happy about how it looked, so I made some changes to it.

One of the things that made DS9 such a great series was the deep and fascinating characters. And Kira Nerys was one of the most complex characters in all of Trek. Her story lines were some of the most poignant and beautifully written parts of the series. “Duet,” “The Darkness and the Light” and “Ties of Blood and Water” are just a few prominent examples. Kira is so emotionally damaged from the Cardassian Occupation on her home, but she still perseveres. Kira’s hatred for the Cardiassians is not treated as unjustified, but she must slowly overcome her bitterness for her own sake. She is an incredibly strong, intelligent and non-nonsense soldier. And it is refreshing to have a character like Kira in Star Trek; a character who is so raw and hurt from something that deeply damaged her life and her people. The writers treated the issue of genocide with a deep respect, overall, through the character of Kira. And it was one of the best things the franchise had ever done, imo.
I’m deeply relieved she never had a relationship Dukat, as was originally planned. I am so glad Nana Visitor stood against it, because it really would have been terrible and out of character for Kira. Nana Visitor cared so much about this character, and that shows in the way she brings Kira’s conflict to life over the course of the show. Kira was such an amazingly strong and passionate character who was always engaging to watch. I also love watching her interactions with the other characters, particularly Jadzia and Odo. Kira’s friendship with Jadzia was incredibly adorable and warmth and understanding in her relationship with Odo was something I loved deeply.
