Jun. 20th, 2013 10:41 pm Christopher Nolan is a very respected director with a huge following. I’ve liked some of his work, but at the same time, I have major issues with him. I remember reading the Christopher Nolan says that he often tells stories from his fears. He claims that since his greatest fear is losing his wife, he creates stories around this concept. Which is why nearly every one of his films has at least one fridged woman in them. His storytelling is always from a male perspective, and the women are never as developed as the men.
The fridged woman is not a trope that’s new or innovative in fiction. Not at all. This trope is such is a common, often central, element of his work. And he’s often praised as a strong, innovative director. While there can be unique aspects to his work, this certainly isn’t one of them. I wonder what would happen if a female director used her fear of losing her husband as a reoccurring theme in her storytelling.
