I’ve been reading a book about planning a novel called How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method. And it’s probably the best guide to writing I’ve ever read.

It doesn’t just instruct you how to write, although it does that clearly and thoroughly, it shows you how to write. At first, the book takes the reader through each step of the Snowflake Method by using folktale characters in a corny but effective way.

The author shows the reader in depth how to tell a story. The Snowflake Method has ten steps, and they've really helped me to organize my plot and get a better hold on my characters. It’s really helpful to use for a first draft, and it’s designed so that if you backtrack and need to make major changes, you can do most of them in the planning stages. Here is an article by the author that outlines the ten steps really thoroughly. If you want to get the book, you can buy it on Amazon. You can get it on Kindle for $3.65 US, or as a paperback for $8.99 US.
