A guy just mansplained the definition of misogyny to me. In my Contemporary Poetry class we discuss and analyse poems on the forums. I was talking about Shakespeare’s sonnets and I stated that while he was progressive for his time, his work also reflected the misogynistic views of the time. Another student who introduced himself by saying teaches Shakespeare sonnets in high school my comments well though out and insightful. However, he said he disagreed that Shakespeare had misogyny in his work because “discrimination is not the same thing as hatred.” He told me that the women in Shakespeare’s been portrayed as powerless, (?) but that wasn’t an example of hatred for women. Btw, I was talking about a sonnet where Shakespeare denigrated a woman based on her appearance.

Well, of course, it makes perfect sense to complain... as long as he's also calling out the terms homophobia and transphobia as ableist and inaccurate, and as long as he's making similar critiques of phrasing like "it took balls to do that" and "man up," and as long as he's offering alternate terms to use instead.

Somehow, I strongly doubt he is.
