It was Miki and Juri’s third match that day. The steady rhythm of the thrust and parry of their swords reverberated throughout the room. Miki was a talented and swift fencer. However, he was far too easy to read.
Miki attacked. He was unsteady and hesitant. Juri knocked the sword from Miki’s hand with one swift motion. It flew across the room, clattering to the ground unceremoniously. He stumbled backwards in surprise and fell to the marble floor. Miki removed his mask and smiled sheepishly up at his sparring partner.
“I guess I need more practice,” the boy admitted.
Juri removed her mask as well and offered Miki a hand with a small, reassuring smile that would go unnoticed to most others. However, Miki gratefully took her hand and cheerfully thanked his partner.
“You are certainly skilled at fencing, but I told you once before; you’re more suited to the piano and academia.”
“I suppose that’s true. You are a far better duellist than I am.” Miki said with a warm and gentle smile.
Juri closed her eyes. She chuckled softly and without mirth. “Well, I suppose I’m accustomed to deception by now.”
